MUELLER: ROBBEN NOT SELFISH

Bayern Munich player Thomas Mueller has said that Arjen Robben is definitely not a selfish player. The former Chelsea star has been accused of selfishness by the Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer, who appeared to suggest that Arjen Robben might be a good player, but he needs to reduce his selfishness in order to make his teammates feel more important.

According to Franz Beckenbauer, Arjen Robben is the kind of player who does not celebrate with his team mates, even when they have made a significant contribution in helping him score a goal. However, Thomas Mueller has come to the defence of his teammate Arjen Robben by saying that the Dutch star is definitely not a selfish player.

Thomas Mueller was the top scorer at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He is now an integral part of the Bayern Munich team. It has often been said that the presence of Arjen Robben has made it difficult to integrate Thomas Mueller within the team, as both of them are similar kind of players. However, the player has said that he is extremely happy to be part of a team that contains Arjen Robben because of the fact that he is not a selfish individual.

“We’ve heard this often before, but these charges of egoism don’t apply because one of the aspects of Arjen Robben’s game is that he is very strong in dribbling and you usually dribble alone,” Mueller told reporters Tuesday,” Thomas Mueller said after Franz Beckenbauer made a comment about the former Real Madrid star. “He is selfish like so many others. He has to think more of being useful to the team, ” Beckenbauer said. Arjen Robben so far has made 12 appearances for the club this season, and has scored five goals in the process.

ROBBEN WANTS NEW DEAL

Bayern Munich striker Arjen Robben has said that he will be looking to extending his current contract with the German club only after February. The midfielder has endured an indifferent spell at the German club – he has been injured often, but has found himself to be the best player for the club when fit.

Hence, there have been suggestions that Bayern Munich will be thinking twice when it comes to extending the contract of the former Real Madrid midfielder. Arjen Robben has been at the forefront of everything positive about Bayern Munich this season. He is valued at around £ 25 million, but could depart the club on a free if he chooses not to extend the contract.

Instead of concentrating on extending his contract, Arjen Robben has said that his main priority will be to concentrate on his fitness. He has suffered a number of niggling injuries in the past, but it is something that cannot be contributed towards the Bayern Munich medical staff alone. Arjen Robben has endured a number of injury problems the past – most notably during his Chelsea career. However, given his exceptional pace and skill, there would be no shortage of offers on the table if he decides to leave Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

“The club knows how I feel about it. I feel comfortable here and I see no reason to leave at the moment. But that is not a priority for me right now. The priority is to play again and to be important to the team. The support has done me very well. The club has talked a lot with me and I’m very grateful,” he told tz-online when asked about his future.  He has scored 32 goals in just 46 matches for Bayern Munich since his £ 20 million move from Real Madrid.

Hoeness hopes Robben will Return

Arjen Robben has always had a problem with his fitness, which began from his days at Chelsea. However, he is regarded as one of the best players in the world when he is fully fit and this is a view that Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness also shares.

Arjen Robben has come under criticism of late for failing to stay fit for most of the season. Only recently, he had a lengthy spell on the sidelines, although Bayern Munich managed to come out of this spell victorious. The regular injuries has made Arjen Robben less effective in recent seasons.

However, president Uli Hoeness has said that Arjen Robben is probably the best player Bayern Munich have at the moment because he can change the game positively for Bayern Munich even in the past few minutes. His exceptional pace and skill have produced a number of late goals for Bayern Munich. His importance was once again demonstrated in the match against Werder Bremen during the weekend when he managed to score twice, despite being on the pitch for only 30 minutes. Bayern Munich signed Arjen Robben from Real Madrid for a relatively low transfer fee of around £ 18 million, and he has been a major hit in Germany.

“In the last 10 minutes he can always decide a game – with a shot into the corner, a strong dribble or a sure-headed penalty kick. We need him. Arjen must every now and then look for the one-on-one. When he changes his playing style, you can take the angle out of him,” Hoeness was quoted as saying by Bild. Arjen Robben was also one of the important players for the Netherlands at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He came extremely close to giving the Dutch a lead in the finals before being denied by Casillas.

Robben Needs More Time

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has said that he needs to have more game time before he can show his full potential. Arjen Robben was one of the reasons for Bayern Munich reaching the final of the Champions League few seasons ago but he has become slightly injury prone in the last few years. He had a groin surgery in October and recently played his first match after undergoing surgery. Since Bastian Schweinsteiger and other important players are also injured, Arjen Robben is expected to get some much-needed game time before he returns to full fitness, probably starting against Villiareal.

It is going to be an extremely important group stage match against Villarreal. Villarreal are all but finished in the group stages of the Champions League – their hopes of making it into the Europa League also lie pretty much in tatters due to the impressive form shown by Napoli. If they do not get anything out of the Bayern Munich match, then Villarreal will not be able to make it into the Europa League. The biggest competition for Bayern Munich for topping the group comes from Manchester City. The club started their inaugural Champions League season rather poorly, but have since recovered to be considered as one of the cometition’s main contenders.

Bayern Munich currently lead the table by three points, but they need to maintain that advantage ahead of the return leg at Eastlands. Robben is expected to play a key part in the match against Villarreal. He said, “It was fantastic to be back on the training ground, and also back with the boys on the football pitch. It wasn’t an easy game to start in, and I started to get tired towards the end, but I thought I did enough to convince the coach to put me in for the next game. Playing matches is completely different from the usual training.”

Villarreal were defeated during the weekend in the la Liga.
