ROBBEN SHINES

Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund was easily the most anticipated matches of the Bundesliga in this month and despite the absence of Franck Ribery for Bayern Munich they still managed to claim a vital victory that gave them some breathing space at the top of the German League.

Following their 3-0 victory over their rivals, Arjen Robben spoke about what matches like this feels like as he even said that he wishes all matches were as intense as that one.

“If it was up to me, I would be fine with playing Dortmund every week,” the Dutchman told the official Bayern website.I love games like this. These are the games you dream of when you’re a little boy – in stadiums like this, with this atmosphere, against this kind of opposing team. What more do you want.”

The Dutch winger later went on saying that despite their advantage at the top of the league, they have to keep their feet on the ground as anything can happen at anytime.

He added: “We’ve taken a big step, but let’s not forget it was only 1-0 until five minutes from the end, and Dortmund had chances to win it as well. We need to keep both feet on the ground.”

Arjen Robben is one of the top candidates on receiving the 2013 Ballon d’Or alongside his partner Ribery. Even though the favorites on winning the award is spread between Messi, C.Ronaldo and Ribery no one can deny the Dutchman from having a sensational last season with his memorable winning goal during the finals of the Champions League as Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 and were claimed as the Champions of Europe.

ROBBEN RUBS SALT

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has rubbed salt into the wounds of Manchester City by saying that the Premier league outfit did not pose them a tough challenge in the Champions league group match. Manchester City entertained Bayern Munich at the Etihad stadium in the second group match. Manager Manuel Pellegrini was given the task of getting the club into the knockout stages of the competition after previously failing at the group stages under the management of Roberto Mancini. City, though, are totally outclassed by the Germans, who are the current owners of the competition.

Robben scored in his fifth straight Champions league match in order to give the second consecutive victory for Bayern in the group matches. Franck Ribery opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a fierce shot that could have been saved by City goalkeeper Joe Hart. Thomas Müller then doubled the advantage early in the second half by managing to beat the offside trap. Robben’s goal, though, was the pick of the bunch after he took on several defenders before hitting past Hart with his right foot, which does not happen very often. Bayern also dominated the game in several areas of the pitch – most notably possession.

Robben has alluded to this fact by saying that the Germans played some terrific football for 70 minutes.

“The first 70 minutes we played some terrific football. We were so dominant against a big team in Europe. We didn’t expect an easy game like that. It is a compliment to our team, but we expected more from City. We didn’t give them any space, we pressed them right up to the goalkeeper, and they just kicked it away. Sometimes they gave us too much space and we used the space well. City weren’t as organised defensively as we had expected,” said Robben.

ROBBEN IS KEY

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben, who was on the fringes of the first team just a few months before the end of last season, has managed to establish himself once again as one of the important players at the club. However, he will be starting from a fresh point after the arrival of Guardiola as the new manager of the German club. Guardiola is a staunch supporter of selfless play, which has prompted suggestions that Robben may not have a future at the Allianz Arena under Guardiola. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid winger, though, says that the arrival of Guardiola will actually help him improve even further.

Guardiola recently described Robben as a gifted player, which has delighted the 31-year-old. He has been a forefront for the Bayern Munich attack alongside Frank Ribery and Mario Gomez for the last few years. He finally achieved the ambition of lifting the Champions League title by beating Borussia Dortmund in the final last year. Robben scored the all-important winner in the match, which has proved to be a turning point in his career as well. Only a few months before, Robben was a substitute in most of the matches due to the form of Thomas Müller.

“I want to keep improving as a player and I think Pep Guardiola is the right man for that. His words of praise are a terrific compliment and it does make me a little proud. I’m looking forward to the time with him. I’ve had a number of outstanding coaches in my career and now there’s another one. I’m a little older these days, but I’m always open for something new. He’s a great coach and I’ve heard he really throws himself into training and talks a lot with the players. I’m really excited,” said Robben.
